xmpp-logo-text-white.png (38527 bytes) FAQs: XMPP

What is XMPP?
XMPP (Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol), also known as Jabber, is a lightweight, open-source, federated chat protocol. It supports text messaging, file uploads, image embeds, reactions, chat history, user profiles, and profile pictures (client-dependent). Think of it as a decentralized, privacy-friendly alternative to Discord with the bonus of federation, so you can talk to users on other XMPP servers (just like email works across different providers).

How do I get started with XMPP?
You need a client and an account (called a JID Jabber ID, like an email address). We recommend Profanity for a terminal based experience and Gajim for a full graphical experience. On mobile, try Conversations (Android) or Monal (iOS). Most clients support end-to-end encryption (OMEMO) for private chats.

How do I register an account?
You have two options:

1. Host your own XMPP server.
This gives you full control, messages and files stay on your server. If you own a domain, you can use addresses like name@yourdomain.com. Easy self-hosting options include Prosody or ejabberd.

2. Use a public XMPP provider.
Create a free account on a public server. Popular ones include
07f.de, jabber.fr, redlibre.es, and xmpp.is. View a list of providers here. (Note: the provider's domain becomes part of your JID, e.g. user@xmpp.is.)

Follow the provider's rules to avoid bans, different servers have different rules, but at the end of the day, you can make a new account if needed.

How do I join the chat after I've registered?
You join a Multi-User Chat (MUC) room by entering its full address in your client. For example: general@muc.ionic1k.org.

All our MUCs live at muc.ionic1k.org and use the topic as the local part
(e.g. general@muc.ionic1k.org, tech@muc.ionic1k.org, unix@muc.ionic1k.org, networking@muc.ionic1k.org, radio@muc.ionic1k.org, trains@muc.ionic1k.org, etc.).

How do I know what channels are linked/bridged?
All XMPP MUCs here are bidirectionally bridged to the corresponding IRC channels. The bridged rooms include: General, tech, techsupport, unix, networking, radio, trains, pol, vctxt, and bridge.

The bridge room lets you talk to the general chat of the
/Ionic1k/ Discord server (and is also linked to IRC).

What is IRC?
IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is an open, lightweight chat protocol supporting text chat, file transfers (via DCC), anonymous/guest connections, and more. It's one of the oldest chat systems still widely used, simple, fast, and server-based.

How do I get started with IRC?
It is highly recommended to use an IRC bouncer or proxy
. Connecting directly exposes your IP address to others. A bouncer also gives you persistent chat history and lets you stay connected 24/7 even when your client is offline. Bouncers can either be self hosted or you can use a public one.

Recommended clients: catgirl (terminal
based) or HexChat (graphical desktop).

How do I connect and join the chat?
Connect your client to
irc.ionic1k.org or irc.ionic1k.net (use SSL/TLS if your client supports it for encrypted connections).

Unlike XMPP, you don't need an account to join
, just pick any nickname and connect. Once on the server, type
/list to see all channels, then /join #channelname to enter one (example: /join #general). Type /motd anytime to see the server's welcome message and useful links.

How do I use server commands and register a name?
This server uses
ChanServ and NickServ for channel and nickname management.

Change nickname: /nick newname

Register your nickname (creates a persistent account): type in chat

/msg NickServ register <password> <email>

Or shorter:
/ns register <password> <email>

To register anonymously, just omit the email address.

After registering, log in on reconnect using
SASL, set username to your registered nick and enter your password. You can also manually identify with:

/msg NickServ identify <password> or /ns identify <password>.

Need help? Type /help NickServ or /msg NickServ help.

MBM_Phone.png (1462 bytes) FAQs: Mumble Voice Chat

What is Mumble?
Mumble is a free, open-source, low-latency voice chat application similar to TeamSpeak. It offers high-quality audio, noise suppression, automatic gain control, text chat alongside voice, user permissions/ACLs, and is very lightweight.

How do I get started with Mumble?
Download the official Mumble desktop client from mumble.info, or use the  Mumble Web client directly in your browser. There are also mobile clients and other desktop alternatives available if you prefer.

How do I connect and join the voice chat?
Connect to mumble.ionic1k.org or mumble.ionic1k.net and join with your desired username.

You can also register your username on the server (through the client or web interface) to reserve it permanently and prevent others from taking it. Registered users can keep settings and get channel permissions.

Note:
PLEASE Use Push-to-Talk (PTT) for noisy environments. Nobody wants to hear background noise.
